CAMPUS:

  • Remember today is the last day to make your voice heard in the 2019 USC Election, as the online voting poll closes at 8pm this evening

LOCAL:

  • Angelo Stavrou, who owned Merla Mae Ice Cream, a popular Ice Cream and sweet treat destination here in the city passed away on January 28th after a battle with cancer
  • He was 75 years old
  • When the previous owner of Merla Mae got into legal trouble in 1998, he took over the popular local business
  • It a deal that apparently happened through cell bars
  • It was said he would arrive early in the morning, an hour and a half before opening, to clean or do whatever else needed to be done before customers arrived
  • 20 year after he took over Merla Mae, it is still a staple in the community, especially during the hot summer nights

SPORTS:

  • The Mustangs had a successful run at their OUA Championships in Guelph this past weekend, with seven athletes reaching the podium
  • These top finishes qualify all seven Mustangs for the U SPORTS National Championships in Calgary, Alberta at the end of the month
  • Both men's and women's teams placed fourth, with the women's team just two points shy of third
  • Brayden Ambo led the men placing second in the 82kg division
  • Ambo beat the first seeded wrestler in the weight class to reach the final, were his opponent bested him in a highly competitive match, which ended 5-5 with Ambo losing on criteria
  • Ambo, a Captain on this year's team, placed fourth at last year's U SPORTS National Championships
  • The other two captains, Julie Steffler and Michalia Walls, both qualified for the National Championships at the end of the month
  • Steffler placed second in the 59kg division, losing in the finals to last year's U Sports Champion - Hannah Taylor from Brock
  • Walls placed third in the 63kg weight class
  • Christine Grafe also reached the podium this past weekend, placing third at 48kg
  • Jackson Browning took third place in the 100kg
  • Next up for the Mustangs will be the U SPORTS National Championships in Calgary, Alberta on February 22 and 23, 2019

WEATHER:

  • Environment Canada has issued a Freezing Rain warning, it is expected overnight into tomorrow morning
  • An area of freezing rain is expected to move over Southwestern Ontario overnight into early Wednesday morning
  • The freezing rain could persist for much of Wednesday before changing to rain in the afternoon
  • The Wednesday morning commute will likely be affected due to the potential for untreated surfaces to become icy
  • Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery, ice build-up may cause tree branches to break
  • This afternoon we should see a high of 1 with a mainly sunny sky before the freezing rain takes over
  • Tomorrow’s high of 0 will feel more like -5, with wind gusts up to 40km/h
  • Thursday we have a 80% of seeing some rain, with a high of 7 degrees
