FC London beat Vaughn Azzuri

FC London Women Hold Off Vaughn Azzuri

Greg Bowman

It was a clash of the titans in the League 1 as the first place FC London women’s team welcomed second place Vaughn Azzuri to German Canadian Field on Saturday evening.

The first half of the game saw a timid start from London, as Vaughn was able to open the scoring in the 20th minute courtesy of Nour Gonheim. But the German Canadian Field faithful was raucous, and eventually sparked London as they responded in the 30th minute. Jade Kovacevic put a perfect ball through the back line of Vaughn, right to the feet of Daniella Strano, who promptly finished it with authority. Momentum continued to be on the side of London, as Kovacevic went back on attack in the 38th minute, and chipped one over the Azzuri keeper to give her team the lead going into half.

The second half saw London try and park the bus and preserve the lead. They were successful in doing so for the first 25 minutes, but eventually Vaughn was able to break through London’s defense, and Sami Falkenstein was able to tie it up. All signs were pointing towards a tie between the top two teams in League 1. With just a point separating them in the standings coming in, London would surely be happy to see that unchanged with the draw. But Jade Kovacevic had different things in mind, as she was sent loose in the 88th minute and was able to beat the Vaughn keeper to give her team a late 3-2 lead. It was Kovacevic’s 11thgoal of the season, in just her sixth game. London would hold on and steal three points against the Vaughn Azzuri.

Earlier in the day, Durham United were able to leapfrog London for first place, but the three points the FC were able to steal saw them regain the top spot. A tight race in the League 1 standings sees an undefeated London squad leading the pack, as they strive for their third straight provincial title. Their quest will continue on Saturday against who else but the Durham United, as London will play their second consecutive first-second matchup.
