Mustangs Soccer Legend Retires
Rock Basacco, head coach of the Western Mustangs men’s soccer team, recently announced his retirement from the position Monday of this week. During his tenure as Head Coach he led Western to 7 OUA Championships, as well as success at the CIS National Championships including; Bronze Medals in 2004 and 2007, and back-to-back Championships in 1998 and 1999. He also had the opportunity to participate at the highest level of university sports accompanying Team Canada to the FISU Summer Universiade. helping Canada to it's best-ever finish at the event with a 4th place finish at the 2007 Games in Bangkok, Thailand and was also on staff for the team's second best finish, with a 7th place result in 2013 in Kazan, Russia.
The decision to retire, while difficult, was made because Rock felt it was the best decision for the team. Although Western has played well, they have not placed at the National level since finishing 5th in 2010, and Coach Basacco felt it was time to step aside in hopes fresh faces would take the squad to the next level. It’s amazing to see that level of love and dedication for one’s club in a day where people cling to the limelight.
While he has retired from the Western Mustangs men's soccer program, he hasn’t set down his clipboard quite yet. Rock will be continuing his coaching career with a local women’s club, a new experience he says he looks forward to. On behalf of all at Radio Western, we wish him well in his new endeavours.
