Ivey's Sport Media Conference

This past Friday, Fischer & Associates hosted an event for Western students in the Ivey building. Social Media x Sport: An Insight Into the World of Social Media hosted speakers at the top of their fields and even had two Western Alumni. The event was meant to give students a free opportunity to learn firsthand how to engage target audiences, predict and capitalize on trends, increase revenues and sales etc.

The host of the event, Fischer & Associates, had their own Jeff Fischer speak at the event. Their company represents the brand and business of elite athletes and their roster includes players like Damian Warner and Khamica Bingham, just to name a few. Fischer spoke about his company and what they provide as well as how athletes today tend to navigate their online presence.

Vanessa Morbi, VP of Marketing and Digital for the CFL, also spoke at the event and gave attendees some insight into how big companies work to stay on top of online trends and turn them into profits. Morbi also addressed the importance of creating value, not noise; stating that what the company has to say can’t be lost to the general noise of the internet and creating content of value will combat the issue. When asked how she handles such a male dominated work environment, Morbi replied that once you deliver, no one will question your skill.

Also at the event was U Sports COO, David Goldstein, who talked about how to keep your brand consistent across multiple platforms. Brad Jones from Jones Entertainment Group told the audience how social media tripled the exposure of his brand over a five year period and how critical his online branding was to the growth of his company and the events they host, such as Rock the Park here in London.

One of the two Western alumnus in attendance was Donnovan Bennett, a past member of Radio Western who now spends his time at Sportsnet as a radio host. Bennet said in an interview that he owes nearly all of his success to his time at Western and working with us here at the station. In his presentation, Bennett taught the audience the importance of each social media platform and how to make them work for you.

Alex Kopacz, Canadian Bobsled athlete who won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, fills the slot as the second Western alumnus at the event. Kopacz sat on the athlete panel at the end of the event and answered questions. He spoke about the difficulties of balancing your brand and your career online and how the two are so intertwined.

All the speakers at the event created more of an understanding to what goes on within such big names in sport and shared strategies helpful to Western students looking to go down similar career paths. The event was a great opportunity for students to learn from the best and all in attendance were busy taking notes and hanging onto every word of each presenter.
