The London Jr. Mustangs teams had a unique gift for their caretakers on Mother’s Day, with the OFL and OPFL season-openers taking place at TD Stadium.

Six London Jr. Mustangs teams took the field against various opponents, with some teams trying to maintain their dominance of a division, while others were looking to acclimate some new additions both on the field and the sidelines.

Atom - London Jr. Mustangs v/ Hamilton Jr. Tiger-Cats

In the first game of the day, the Atom division Jr. Mustangs scored early and often against the Hamilton Jr. Tiger-Cats.

They recovered their own opening kickoff, and proceeded to score a touchdown on their first three offensive plays of the game before their opponent was even able to gain a yard. Anderson Lewis, Daylon Sor and Blake Howse all had multiple touchdowns, with quarterback Sam Trupish even picking up a nice TD pass through the air.

The London Jr. Mustangs Atom team is now 1-0 on the season after a 51-0 win to kick off their season.

Peewee - 9 on 9 team v/ Durham Jr. Dolphins

The London Jr. Mustangs peewee blue team had a tough start to their season, clashing with a tough Durham Jr. Dolphins squad. Ethan Garwe was a force for Durham, scoring almost all their points through receptions, rushes and even an interception return.

The London defence was strong though, penetrating the Durham offensive line for multiple sacks and tackles in the backfield.

Towards the end of the game, the Jr. Mustangs started to get their mojo, scoring two touchdowns. The first was a 55-yard drive that resulted in a rushing TD. The next play, they went 80-yards down the field which was made possible by a huge passing play from Tayshaun Duncan to Isaac Sears.

It was too little too late though, as the Dolphins came away with a 43-12 win in the first game of the season.

Peewee - 12 on 12 team v/ Hamilton Jr. Tiger-Cats

In the 12 on 12 division, the London Jr. Mustangs’ peewee orange team had a strong start to their season. They scored early and often, starting with Bobby Tsilogianis returning the game’s opening kickoff 70-yards for a touchdown. Tsilogianis picked up his second major of the day on London’s second drive. After Jed Trupish found Drake Logan for a big pickup through the air, Tsilogianis got some blocks and ran it 20 yards for a touchdown. Tsilogianis had three touchdowns by the third quarter. Mason Sefton also had a receiving touchdown for London.

On defence, Jackson Leshuk had a strong game, forcing a couple of fumbles and getting multiple tackles in the backfield. Ben Ohara also had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

The London Jr. Mustangs’ peewee orange team won their first game of 2019 by a 72-0 final.

Bantam - London Jr. Mustangs v/ Essex Ravens

The OPFL season got underway on Sunday, starting with the bantam division Jr. Mustangs taking on the rival Essex Ravens.

London got on the board early after a long completion from DJ Fonti to Tyrell Campbell. That led to Ethan Tran punching it in for a touchdown on the first drive of the game.

The Ravens responded on their opening possession, with Rhys Stanley finding Patrick Taylor for a 55-yard touchdown reception. The Jr. Mustangs marched back down the field with a couple of big plays, then Evan Horton catching a Fonti pass in the endzone.

Essex did their part, with Kevin Neave being found in the endzone on a fourth and goal situation to make it 13-12 for London at halftime.

The Ravens opened up the third quarter with another long touchdown connection from Stanley to Taylor to give Essex its first lead of the game. Tyrell Campbell caught a touchdown of his own to even the game up again.

As per the pattern of the game, the Raven’s Nathon Johnson caught another TD pass from Stanley to put his team up again. Kanye Nethersole evened the game again with a TD rush that capped off an impressive drive from London.

Finally in the fourth quarter, Nathon Johnson put Essex ahead for good with a 55-yard touchdown run to make it 34-27, which was the final score.

Junior Varsity - London Jr. Mustangs v/ Essex Ravens

In the JV division, the Jr. Mustangs started their season off on the right foot with a great effort against the Essex Ravens.

On the first play from scrimmage, Quinton Herlick broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run to give London their first touchdown of the season.

Quarterback Mack Baker followed the next possession, capping off a drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Baker got it done with his arm too, finding Cameron Deleary for a 45-yard touchdown catch.

After the Ravens got one score back, Baker ran another touchdown in to give him four total touchdowns by halftime.

London tacked on two more touchdowns from Jamie Lane and Ethan Dolby to give them a 42-7 win in their first game of the season.

Senior Varsity - London Jr. Mustangs v/ Essex Ravens

Not having lost a game since 2016, the Jr. Mustangs’ senior varsity team was looking to carry the streak into 2019 against the Essex Ravens.

They started the game off strong, forcing a safety, then Taylor Elgersma connecting with Mohsen Jamal for a long hookup to give London an early 9-0 lead.

After they recovered their own onside kick, they marched down the field again with Elgersma scoring on a QB sneak to lead 16-0. Essex was forced to take another safety to trail 18-0, but they got on the board before the end of the first half with Emmitt Rosati finding Nicholas Mackenzie for a 20-yard touchdown pass.

In the third quarter, the Ravens forced a fumble which resulted in a touchdown pass from Rosati to Vyshonne Janusas to make it 18-14. London forced another safety to make it 20-14, and locked it down on defence for the rest of the game to take their first win of the season and remain undefeated since 2016.
